The Steps of Jesus
Thursday

Matthew 26:17-35; Mark 14:12-31; Luke 22:7-38; John 13:1-16:33

"Obedience to the Father is more important than our wants and wishes."

Passover night – The Law stated that if you lived 15 miles or closer, you must attend the feasts. It was/is the desire of all Jews to attend one of the main feasts at least once in their lifetime.

The disciples inquire as to where they are going to hold their Passover supper and Jesus sends Peter and John into town with specific instructions. (Mark 14:12-16)

They are reclining at the table, the food has been set, they have started eating, but something is missing. Do you know what it is? (John 13:1-11)

Jesus announces someone is going to betray Him – Matthew 26:23-24 – Why do you think Jesus said this? What is the meaning of the phrase, "It would have been better for him if he had not been born"?

Then he teaches them about the Lord's Supper (Matthew 26:26-29; Mark 14: 22-25; Luke 22:19-20). What is the importance of observing the Lord's Supper?

Look at Luke 22:24-27, what is he talking about? Why would they be so tied up with this idea of being the greatest?

Look with me to John 13:12-20. So, what does it take to be a servant? How does that work or how is that viewed in our society today?

Luke 22:31-34 what do you think Jesus means when he says that "Satan has asked…"? What does that say to you about you?

In Matthew 26:30-35 Jesus says that they all will "fall away on account of me…" what do you think he means? Why is it important to know what we believe? Why do you think that Jesus says what He says to Peter in verse 32? How does that help you in your walk?

They are preparing to go out to the garden and yet Jesus makes an interesting statement in Luke 22:35-38. What do you think is the meaning of this?

John 14 – The promise of Jesus to go prepare a place for us (14:1-12, 27-31). We don't have to know the way, we just have to be ready when He calls for us. In the meantime, we can ask for anything as long as we ask in His name (14:13-14). What do you think He means by this? What does His name have to do with anything? What does it take to get us ready for Him? (14:15-26)

John 15 – The teaching of the vine and branches. (15:1-14) What does this have to do with us and how does it work in the whole "death of Jesus" idea? Again, He reiterates the idea of asking anything in His name, but this time He puts it in the midst of talking about friends and fruit.(15:15-17) How does this work, what does He mean? Then He gives the warnings about how the world is going to look at the disciples. (15:18-27) Have you seen this in your life? Do you expect to see it in your life? When?

John 16 – Persecution will come at some time in some form, so be ready. (16:1-6) How does that make you feel? He then says it is good for Him to go away. (16:7-11) Why do you think that is? How is it helpful for us today? How do we prepare ourselves for the truth and how do we stay true to the truth in a world where there is no absolute truth? (16:12-15) The disciples still hadn't caught on yet. (16:16-31) Do you think they just didn't want to believe it? It's obvious He was speaking of His death and He knows exactly what the world will be thinking, but the Christians will get the last rejoicing. Those who stand firm and hold on will be rewarded. The joy of the world is only temporary. Why do you think He gives the last little assurance? (16:31-33)
